Australians Say Sorry In Sydney

 Australians Say Sorry In Sydney

Around 1500 people marched through downtown Sydney on Saturday to mark Australia's 10th annual Sorry Day and the 40th anniversary of the referendum which ended constitutional discrimination against Aborigines.

On the 27th of May 1967 more than 90 percent of the Australian electorate voted yes on the question of whether two discriminatory references should be removed from the constitution.

The anniversaries come as the Federal Opposition yesterday pledged $261million over four years towards improving primary health care for indigenous Australians.

Research released by Reconciliation Australia suggests Australians are ready for better relations between indigenous and non-indigenous people. A national survey found that most Australians believed reconciliation was about developing mutual respect and that indigenous people had equal rights.

It found 71 percent of people considered developing better relationships between black and white Australians was important.

Just under 40 percent felt it was either very important or extremely important.
